I am a fierce Libertarian Democrat. If you don't know what this is, it is someone who practically agrees on all major issues with the national Democratic Party, except in the case of 2nd Amendment Gun Rights. We must remember that the 2nd Amendment wasn't written as joke addition to our Constitution so we would be guaranteed the right to hunt. It was inspired by the English Monarchy's attempt to seize control of weapons and munitions in order to prevent the colonial militias from resisting them. Some people will realize this, but will still argue that the Founding Father's did not envision a modern era of automatic/semiautomatic weapons, rocket-propelled explosives and armor piercing munitions. However, if our government was to ever attempt to suppress our right to peaceful demonstration by threatening to run us over with tanks, we would need semi-automatic weapons loaded with armor piercing ammunition and rocket-propelled grenades. Does this sound like a silly scenario? Look at Tiananmen Square in China, a country where the people do NOT have the right to bear arms. People cannot imagine such a scenario occuring in the United States, but, unknown to them, that is the 2nd Amendment that gives them this security. The 2nd Amendment is what protects our 1st Amendment; and our 1st Amendment is what protects our Democracy, so, by implication, our 2nd Amendment is what protects our entire Constitution, and our Constitution is what protects the people from the government. Then again, by implication, the 2nd Amendment is all that stands between you and government. Tragic accidents, like Senator Gifford's, will occur, from time to time; however, this is the lesser of two evils. You have a choice between the occasional maniac that murders/injures a handful of innocent people, or the relentless oppression of an entire government that murders/tortures hundreds of innocent people every day. Furthermore, now law will ever stop the true whackos from obtaining the means and methods of killing people. If they are truly committed to their delusional cause, they will get the gun illegally and kill those people (and with basic chemistry skills, make simple bombs loaded with nails for shrapnel). Gun Control laws would only be used to limited the law abiding masses from obtaining guns. It would start simple and innocent (under Democrats), by requiring criminal/sanity checks. However, it wouldn't be long before the Republican Party pulled a Patriot Act, and made it impossible for anyone except "Law Enforcement Personnel" and "Authorized Military Personnel" to obtain and own guns. Sounds ridiculous that Republicans would do this, especially since they are the gun nuts? 1) The LEADERS of the Republican Party do not support the 2nd Amendment for the reason it was originally written. They only support it to gain a couple of percentage points in elections and to continue receiving big money from the gun lobbies. 2) The FOLLOWERS of the Republican Party are very fickle. Their LEADERS can brainwash them in an instant to be for gun control. 3) Once there is a set of "strong" gun control laws already in place, it only takes a time of Republican control of Congress and the Executive Branch to make those laws as strong as I described above. 4) Once those laws are changed, they'll use tear gas, rubber bullets, heat-rays and sonic weapons to disperse crowds everywhere (you think hitting college students in the face with MACE during the Occupy Wall Street protests was bad?). The law-abiding masses will have already surrendered their weapons and munitions, and would be unable to regain control of their 1st Amendment rights for all eternity. 5) The United States becomes a neo-conservative fascist state for corporations until the end of human civilization.
