In reply to the discussion: Why I think impeachment is an awful horrible no good very bad idea [View all]Garrett78
(10,721 posts)Pence (who, as others have pointed out, may also get thrown out) would be more welcomed by Republicans in Congress than by the Republican Party base. Ironically, Trump (and not theist Pence or Ryan or McConnell) is a god to the GOP base.
If the GOP base thinks that the Republican Party had a hand in Trump's removal, there could be a revolt (many may not vote or may vote 3rd party). Leaving Pence (or whoever) in an unwinnable situation.
That said, if Republicans in Congress all vote against impeachment and act outraged on Trump's behalf, a Trump impeachment could, in fact, rally the troops and do a lot to GOTV for Republicans. It's for that reason that I can't dismiss your argument.
Now, there is the argument that Trump should be removed on principle (regardless of any potential consequences). As inclined as I am to agree with that argument, I know full well that any Republican who replaces Trump will likely pose just as much of a threat (and arguably more of one if said Republican is more competent).
