Like the 1880's when Cornelius Vanderbilt could brag about having the Pennsylvania legislature in his pocket, could hire Pinkertons to shoot striking workers, and declare that He could hire one half of the working class to kill the other half.

Edit- maybe 1898 - after Plessey vs Ferguson and we were starting to become a real player on the world stage after the Spanish-american war.

Definitely before Teddy R started reigning corporate power in.
