The truth is people need their "heroes" so they bestow that term on anyone that says or does something they like no matter how trivial, ordinary or just how shitty their deeds really are.

However fucked we are now, he is one of the people who fucked us. That he did it with a limp and a quick wit fooled just about everyone.
