...actually, given injury rates, a lot less than football.

The U of Akron just reengineered the school to support competitive degrees and part of the revamp was to add esports support the same as athletics. It is where your programmers, digital media, communications types WANT to be. If you want to attract those students, you give them the extracurricular that they want. People will be cheering their school soon.

Competitively, I believe it has crossed the billion dollar mark by now.

Just looked, 493 - 655 million currently, slated for the billion mark by 2020.
