the "Tejanos" who were Mexicans living in what is now Texas, got along fairly well. Once the land grabbers, mercenaries and politicians got involved is when the real troubles grew into open warfare. That's a bit of a broad brush, as Native Americans were in the mix as well, but in general, I think it is an accurate assessment.
