I've said this of before, but it amazes me how no one ever questions the legitimacy of white people like the Trumps, who came to this country from Scotland. I remember when George H.W. Bush was running for president and had his Presidential Election convention. Two of the Keynote Speakers, one a congresswoman and the other a high ranking government official in his 50s and a doctor I believe. In their convention speeches, they talked about their parents migration to this country. The woman, Susan Molinari, a congresswoman married to a congressman, and her husband both were first generation Americans and already were members of the Washington elite establishment. I was happy for them, but I couldn't help but think, my black parent's roots in this country go back further than their first generation roots in America.
Even though I'm happy for how far we've come, I just wonder how much further we could have been without the discrimination of the 1800s and the 1900s, they experienced, which continues even today.
Of course our roots were harder to trace because once you go back to the 1800's its harder to trace because black people didn't have birth certificates back then because at the time slaves were considered personal property, making it harder for us to trace our roots; but not impossible.
