Trump gives a shit about himself, and how much attention, money and power he gets. That's all. His deplorable base see the flag as a symbol of their dystopian fantasy version of the US, so he pretends to give a shit about the flag.

It doesn't really matter what the symbol is. If a horned toad called Harvey was what symbolized their fantasy, he'd be all over the TV dry humping Harvey.
