You are dealing with cops. Even good cops spend most of their time with bad people. Every person except for family, other cops and very good friends are considered bad people. They get to stay alive longer that way. I had friends in Florida that were cops. I knew they trusted me because since I didn't drink I was not only the designated driver, I always carried my .357 mag.
