The ends of a horseshoe are as far apart from each other as they can be in a linear sense, but when considered as part of the shape of a horseshoe, they are really quite close (though they remain separate). Sometimes someone you are philosophically opposed to can follow their logic to its end, and wind up with a position that's awfully close to your own. They may have reached a similar conclusion to your own, but taken a very different path to get there.

It can be an interesting situation: Do you make common cause with a political enemy because you're trying to achieve the same or similar goal? Or do you mistrust the motives of a potential ally enough to keep your distance and let an injustice continue? Are you too pure or not pure enough in pursuing your goal? The current "anti-Israel is anti-semitic" kerfuffle is a good example.
