He and I are not saying don't get angry. Anger is sometimes a hard to avoid gut reaction. However, by being rational and calm about life, it won't control us. The point is to get beyond anger so that it doesn't need to be expressed emotionally.
Turn anger into deliberate and conscious action toward goals, which includes talking to assholes in ways that make it clear to all bystanders and the asshole himself that he is an asshole. Shouting profanty does not accomplish this. It simply informs all bystanders that there is at least one asshole there, namely the one shouting obscenities, and they almost certainly did not hear the remark that prompted it. So from their perspective it is one-sided and not a pretty sight.
