(5,294 posts)"West of Portland" could mean Tillamook, which is due West, or it could mean Astoria, since the Columbia River wends northwest from Portland. I'd travelled through Oregon many times before I ever visited that corner north of Tillamook. Now I live there.
Going down the coast is indeed beautiful, but a weird experience for someone from L.A. (as I was), since for much of California US 101 is a multi-lane divided highway, and for most of Oregon it's just a street; a very busy street in many places, but still just a street.
But along the way south, there are great beaches, some interesting resort towns, the Tillamook visitor center (until a few years ago, while one could get Tillamook cheese anywhere, Tillamook ice cream was a local delicacy), the aquarium in Newport, Sea Lion Caves in Florence, and West Coast Game Park Safari in Bandon (a small, privately-owned zoo, where I have been able to pet and hold baby bobcats, caracals, foxes, lions, tigers, and bears).
