(or perhaps it's a moat? like back in the good old days?) around "us" and "our stuff."

You're point of view is informed and predicated almost entirely on "us vs them." This is the very essence of "America First." Are you perhaps a fan of trade wars too? Perhaps the idea of cooperation and a common enemy will arise in a few more generations. One can always hope.
