...I actually worked on some metathesis reaction, in the other direction. Replacing sodium with calcium or magnesium, in a system where the organic anion was fragile.
Never even got as far as scale up, because our preliminary cost model suggested it would be really expensive.
Getting simple sodium salts to convert to calcium ions is hard. It's really slow going that way, but 2.5 orders of magnitude faster (at least) displacing weak cations with stronger ones. That could do a lot of damage to concrete in a big hurry.
Then, the heat of solution would increase that rate of metathetic exchange.
I worked on some covalent metathesis reactions that were more successful.
