When Merrick Garland is sworn in as attorney general, it will serve as a capstone on a career that has spanned years at the Justice Department and decades as a federal appellate court judge.
Garland, confirmed by the Senate Wednesday in a bipartisan 70-30 vote, touched upon those multiple roles throughout his nomination process and promised to uphold the values hes learned while leading the Justice Department.
From my first job at the Justice Department as a special assistant, to my current job as a federal judge, I have sworn an oath that I would take again if I am confirmed as attorney generalto support and defend the Constitution of the United States, Garland wrote in response to senators questions for the record. I have and will continue to dedicate myself to ensuring the security of our nation, to ensuring the fair and faithful enforcement of our laws, and to protecting the rights of all Americans.
The incoming attorney general already committed to making the prosecutions over the Capitol riots on Jan. 6 his top priority, and also said reaffirming the important role of career staff would be a day one goal.
