The Republicans have courted the White Nationalist racists with the adoption of the Southern Strategy. Unfortunately, it is not limited to the old Dixie States but has many adherents through out the nation. We are a nation that has been divided long before the election Trump who only realized that it was his ticket to the White House. I really doubt that anyone living today will see a dramatic change in basic attitudes. Much of the progress has been in reality only cosmetic and does not reflect the actual situation. I have many relatives in the South who are very adapt at hiding their true feelings in public, but when among friends and relatives are just as prejudice as their grandparents. Minorities are at best only tolerated, not accepted as equals.
