(58,785 posts)Lol, long before Covid I remember a store on a tourist street by a lake with an outside sign declaring that because we (tourists) were stealing so much, unfortunately... Unbelievable! I don't remember the rest, and of course not the inside of the shop.
Btw, of course owners notably suspicious of, and even hostile toward, their customers are almost always conservative, and strongly so. Like people who always badmouth tourists. Conservatives tend to have a darker view of human nature, so that's almost a given, though individuals can surprise us.
Reminds me of an antique shop owner who accepted a check for $180 from me without ID (I'd misplaced it and it was my first time in there) even though it was while she was giving a police report for a far more expensive chest purchased with a kited check. She apparently believed by her customers were basically honest and hadn't forgotten it, or that she wanted me back. She didn't care to live her life otherwise. On my part, I didn't ask her if she at least leaned socially liberal, just knew it. I still have the little Martha Washington sewing chest to remember her by.
