I'm retired now but I worked in printing almost 40 years for many different employers large and small. It used to be that offset printing companies were single proprietors or family-owned and managed. But nowadays there are so few families, because the 2nd (or 3rd) generation had no interest in keeping it going. The younger ones went to college and became doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc.
Your point about the personal thanks and appreciation of the boss/owners - it was very true for many years but it's all gone now.
