I think that a large percentage of applicants bail out of the process before completing an application when the hiring company makes them jump through all sorts of hoops to apply. I'm seeing more and more companies, especially ones that can invest in having decent HR departments, moving towards asking applicants simply submit a resume and maybe a cover letter, or perhaps a few customized answers to questions. For a first round of evaluations there really shouldn't be a need for anything else.
I totally bail on excessively and pointlessly long online applications. A company that makes it a pain in the ass for me to apply to it is probably not one for whom I want to work.
