(34,119 posts)The unvaccinated, as long as there are substantial numbers of them (and there are) are creating variants that we may not be immune to. In addition, effectiveness is a percentage of exposures - so the more exposures, the more likely it is that you will become a breakthrough case.
The vaccine effectives is comparable to pretty much any vaccine, other than the flu. (Measles 97%, Polio 99%, tetanus 100%, diptheria 97%, rubella 97%). People who think mainly about the influenza vaccine (20-40% effectiveness) are jaded as to the normal effectiveness of vaccines. So it is a fatastic vaccine - but it is what we should expect of vaccines that ought to be universal.
We are not isolated communities - and their actions impact whether we get the disease.
