the worst in them. They cheered loudest for his most hateful statements, and he soaked them up and regurgitated them as promises to get elected and keep the cheering going.

That's no contradiction to stupidity. I don't think it's possible to underestimate the civic stupidity of these types. Including their capacity for supporting evil against others without realizing that would end in destruction and harm to them also. They need keepers to protect them from themselves too.
