I live in CA-48. My rep in the House is Republican Michelle Steel, elected in 2020. I expect that she'll be reelected in November.
In Democrat Harley Rouda, we had only a one-term respite from Dana Rohrabacher.
I'll give Steel the benefit of the doubt, in that I suppose she's probably earnest and sincere. But I abhor her politics.
If your representative is a Republican, please tell us about your experience with that person voting in your name. If you've ever written to or called your Republican representative, what did you write or say?
I'm a former legal secretary, and even before I embarked on that career, I was an inflexible proofreader. On May 9, Steel put out a press release in which she slightly misquoted Dr. King. Maybe I was just looking for something to be pissed at; I'll admit that. Still, I pounced. I wrote to Rep. Steel:
Dear Representative Steel,
One of my primary skills as a legal secretary (retired) is proofreading. I found an error in today's press release about your joint amicus brief with Senator Cruz regarding the two Affirmative Action cases currently before the Supreme Court.
In this press release, you quote Dr. Martin Luther King thus: " . . . our countrys aspiration should be to judge people not on the color of their skin but the content of their character."
In "I Have A Dream," Dr. King used the word by. "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
A small thing, yes, and I realize you didn't use a direct quote. Still, I'm sure you want to publish strictly accurate press releases. Please see that your staff is made aware of this error.
Respectfully, your constituent,
Not Heidi
In hindsight, it seems I was just looking for something to bitch at her about, and I'm not happy with myself about that. I stand by what I wrote, though. I wonder if the lowly staffer who reads my email will even consider bumping it up the line. Probably not.
