I had a cousin in Luxembourg who was a great strapping youth in the 1940s. After the Nazis occupied Luxembourg, they kept trying to draft him into the German army. Naturally, he didn't want to serve the country that had occupied his nation. His brother-in-law, a pharmacist, would give him some kind of medicine that made him sick every time the Nazis came around to take him away.

It worked, and my cousin (who died a few years ago) may well have lived to a good old age because of his brother-in-law's potion.

I was lucky enough to have known both men. With Putin's recent attempts to recruit more cannon fodder, this has been on my mind a lot.
