do I get a deduction on my taxes? Even if I don't, I will continue to donate to these folks as I have the money.

The 1099-C. Years ago when I was in credit trouble, one of my creditors or an agency, can't even remember which, let me pay a fraction of what I owed. Basically, they forgave the interest part of the debt which was quite high. I thought that was really nice of them. Until I got the 1099 C in the mail and owed BIG TIME on my taxes that year as I still wasn't making much money at that point and in school. So, yeah, that really hurts. It is real and I can understand why nay-sayers on other threads about the Rolling Jubilee or Strike Debt have criticized this movement for just that reason.

This is good to know...if these people aren't going to get hit again, I will find a way to donate more.
