Except I was "asked" to withdraw from an election. I was threatened and was told that my family were vulnerable too. I got up from the table and told them "give it your best shot."
I served two terms (two years as Mayor) and then retired my political career. I felt my time was better used to volunteer for causes I support.

I don't think it's a simple answer. I think is all of the above, but not in individual cases.
