The Ottoman Empire was defeated in WWI. Britain controlled the region during WWII. The proposed partition, which the Jews accepted and the Arabs rejected would have left the Palestinians with about half the land of modern Israel. And frankly, the Arabs would have gotten the better land. In retrospect, rejecting that deal was foolish. But the Arabs wanted absolute control and for Jews and Christians to be subjects in an Islamic state.
