Had the south not seceded, more than likely Lincoln would have been just another president in the long line until a civil war finally happened.
He had a hard enough time ending slavery even with the south largely defeated after their betrayal of the union.
But they did seceded and Lincoln rose to the occasion, as fdr rose to face the great contraction and wwii.
