25. I used to tell my kids that HATE is a very strong word

and they should think about it very carefully before using it because they might injure someone or even themselves by saying it. My children are thoughtful but also clever. They all told me years later that they did take my lesson to heart, and eliminated the terrible word… but for one exception:

Nothing red from Ohio State ever is allowed to enter the front gate. … Go Blue!!!

So ok. Team sports. I’m still not big on the hate word, but At least I was moderately successful at teaching them Kumbaya. But what do I know? My alma mater is Western Michigan U and we weren’t overly ferocious.

But back to the H word. It truly is ugly and kids do need to think about the if and why they want to use it. And when you explain that to them, they will think about it. Take it from an old lady… let’s not lose the importance of teaching these things to our little ones.
