In reply to the discussion: Are we getting close to a civil war? [View all]OmahaBlueDog
(10,000 posts)47. There have been times closer to Civil War
The 30s - People were broke and desperate. many of the same criticisms leveled at Obama were leveled at FDR. They did not have FAUX, but they did have Hearst, and Col. McCormick and the Chicago Trib. Google images of the German American Bund, or read about Huey Long. Things were bad.
The 50s - Many people have accused Dwight Eisenhower of being a do-nothing President. Perhaps he could, and should havd done more. However, his Presidency was worth it (if for no other reason) for this: Arkansas refused to desegregate Central High in Little Rock, and they tried to use their National Guard to blockade the school. Ike enforced the Court order at gunpoint. First, he sent in the 101st Airborne. Second, he federalized the Arkansas National Guard, and made them subject to his orders. This is a small example in a larger struggle for civil rights. That struggle was violent at times, but never got closer to Civil War than that during the 50s.
The 60s Nixon administration officials are fond of telling everyone that we were on the verge of social breakdown in the late 60s. Drugs, the counter-culture, the campus protests, and the riots resulting from the death of MLK gave many a feeling that the system was coming apart at the seams. We moved on.
