one votes for the candidate in the Democratic column and/or the one who will caucus with democratic candidate when the democratic candidate can't win in those few times
any other vote or protest is a vote for the opposition
Paul Wellstone knew that and so did Dennis Kucinich.
the worst democratic candidate is better than the best republican
any protest vote is while legal, a waste of one democratic vote.
Minus votes count
there are no votes not needed
one cannot say GOTV, then they themselves vote in protest for the non-dem.

and of course, in 1968, any candidate besides LBJ, was to the right of him. ANY OTHER ONE.
Nobody was more liberal than LBJ.
But he was sold down the river too
