Once hear soldiering defined as "the art of doing your job which scared shitless." I'll give credit where it's due, The powers that be try to replace the conditions of battle for training. It helps.

That being said. I didn't face close death in the service. I served between conflicts (official conflicts, the reagen years). Survived leukemia though.
