They lost their souls before FDR passed for those who read his and Truman's words on them. Eisenhower had Nixon with his McCarthyite ways of destroying Democrats.
A few independent minded ones did believe in limited government and civil rights for women and minorities, but they wanted the same wrong economic model as the gilded age, only held in check by the New Deal Democrats. Their actions show who they are.
Nixon has gave us the gifts that kept on killing, Rumsfeld and Cheney and the one whose methodology is still killing us, Donald Segretti.
Reagan had Lee Atwater and the whole party was always borderline Bircher.
