In reply to the discussion: Update 3: Heads-Up Dems !!! - This Is Why David Brat Beat Eric Cantor... [View all]charliea
(260 posts)I've seen this idea expressed on the blogs I frequent, but I haven't seen it raised even once in the last 48 hrs on any of the national news outlets that I sample (of course that rules out Faux News). We know from polls over that last couple of years that many (most?) of Americans really don't think banks, and bankers, were insufficiently chastised for the Great Recession. Sample
Of course this doesn't seem to be acknowledged by the our corporate media outlets, except when an apologist is brought on to say that the anti-banker sentiment is merely something whipped up by the liberal media (which I'm still struggling to find), against the vital and virtuous banking industry. That being said the Venn diagram showing the common ground between Elizabeth Warren and this Brat seem to me to include only this one sentiment.
I agree that Democrats should be out demanding the return of Glass-Steagall, the creation of the financial transaction tax, and increased prosecution (with jail time!) for law-breaking bankers etc. (question: how many of the mortgage robo-signers have been convicted of criminal acts?) I only hope they will. I really wish there had been an exit poll of soon-to-be ex-Congressman Cantor's district to assess the reasons that the voters there produced such a landslide against him. Corporate media seems to have selected the cause as immigration reform, which seems to be at least not true
Looks like they just hated Cantor. But if anyone can point to a poll that finds voter anger concerning banking and bankers in his soon-to-be-ex district I'd love to see it, as I'd find it heartening.
That being said how can the Democratic party rally a base when I hear that one of my Democratic senators, Ron Wyden, is proposing that overseas profits (~$700B) of US corporations should be repatriated, without taxation (!). The Secretary of Education stating that courts finding tenure for teachers in California unconstitutional is a good thing. It has got to stop.
