Btw, in some places people try to go to jail for the food, shelter, and (before the ACA) the pathetic smidgen of healthcare. Same strategy as hurting yourself to get into a hospital or making a suicide attempt to get fast-tracked for shelter.
There is no bedrock welfare based only on lack of cash/resources for single people without children Republicans like to think this forces people in hopeless situations to magically get to work. The actual options are prostitution, begging, and criminal activity as you try to fend off a system that constantly whips you toward homelessness. Once you become homeless, it's next to impossible to break the cycles that keep you on the street. So spending some time in jail on a light charge might actually look good from there.
Think about it. I do. A lot.
