McGovern and Mondale ran against entrenched incumbents. One of them was a dirty trickster whose "plumbers" broke into the national headquarters of the Democratic Party a few months before the election, then a couple of weeks later he pulled an "October surprise" by announcing the imminent end of American involvement in the Vietnam War, thereby taking one of McGovern's main campaign issues away from him.

Mondale shot himself in the foot by promising to raise people's taxes. He was also tied to the "failed" presidency of Jimmy Carter.
