Lee's (or rather his wife's) plantation was confiscated by the federal government during the war and is now Arlington National Cemetery. Lee never owned his own home again. His wife and daughters lived in a rented house in Richmond and after the war, he and they lived in the Washington College (now Washington & Lee Uni) president's house until his death. After his death, the college was faced with the problem of evicting the widow which they solved by making Lee's son, Custis, president.
