Plural marriage does not need to be "legitimated". It is not "the next civil rights fight" after legalising same-sex marriage. The right of two people to marry regardless of sex or gender is NOT AT ALL like plural marriage, they have nothing to do with each other. And no, we won't get there. Go on, look at a map. Look at polygamous societies. Fundamentalist Muslim countries in the Middle East, South Asia and Africa. Polygamy in practise almost invariably means polygyny. I would go so far as to say that plural marriage and a society in which gender equality is a social norm are incompatible. (The ideas of democracy, civil rights and women's rights all developed in monogamous societies; this is very likely not an accident.)
