(50,566 posts)60. Right. It often seems to be a package of nationalism, jingoism, U.S. exceptionalism, and
ignorance/antipathy of/toward the rest of the world. They are the type of people who need to identify with the "winning" team -- USA #1! -- despite mounds of evidence to the contrary.
I'm not saying that everybody who displays a flag is like this, and I know some open-minded liberals fly it, but there is a large element that falls into this category.
