Because we got the former with Nelson and the latter is the BEST we can (vainly I suspect) hope for from any Republican, which is what will be certain to replace him. Most of us know how committee makeup, Senate leadership and presidential nominations work too.

Incidentally if you believe Nelson to be Republican Lite as it appears, his very long career itself puts the lie to Truman's outdated, irrelevent and useless gobbet.
