But freeing people for mental labor requires a fundamentally different form of society and economy than the one we are living in.

Workers exchange labor for capital (money) to buy products to consume.
If all labor is handled by robots, then only those who own the robots in our system benefit from that labor. The former human workers are left to themselves to live whatever brief, miserable lives they can manage.
