159. Um, well, actually, no, I didn't

Nov 2017

I don't drink alcohol and cigarette smoke makes me nauseous. Way back, as in 40+ years ago, a friend did drag me to one bar once while I was in Washington, and finally over 21. I did meet a beautiful young woman when she accidentally stepped on my foot, and had a fun time talking to her. She gave me her phone number and I did call her. When I got bold enough to remark that I should have asked her to come with me instead of parting ways at the joint's door, she told me, "why didn't you?" I'm such a nerd. She was probably sending me signals all night and I didn't pick up on any of them them. Oh, well. That was my one "bar experience." No hopping. Just as well: I probably would have died of either thirst or oxygen deprivation.

Luckily, I met my wife in a Berlin cabaret where I was playing folk music with my brother on a summer vacation. She does drink alcohol (occasional glass of wine--I don't care as long as I don't have to). She never smoked--unusual for a German in the seventies. She was asthmatic as a child, and never got started. By that time, I had learned my lesson--if a woman you like sticks around to talk to you for a long time, it might just be because she likes you.
