(45,251 posts)63. Americans are sometimes too naive about ascribing bad motives.
It's part of our charm (and I do not mean that sarcastically), but it's dangerous. People who get elected to high offices probably aren't really much dumber than the average political message board poster. If we are tempted to assume that stupidity or naivete or the like or being too nice is the primary reason for their behavior, we should probably give it a second thought.
Not saying everyone who gets elected to higher office is infallible, just saying, give it a second thought.
