In cultures where saving face is subsidiary only to breathing, not offending either party was paramount, and it sounds like it was accomplished with all sensitivities being accommodated. Taiwan IS Chinese. Just because they don't share the same flag doesn't mean they are suddenly alien cultures. Geopolitical pressures made them different nations, not different ethnicity.
