Misunderstanding, attribution of the worst possible motives, alienation and psychological distancing. Then, in a crisis, it results in pain and sometimes death. Precisely what embattled communities on both sides can't afford and want but can't seem to be big enough to abandon the pursuit of.

Everybody does what their cultures and their psychologies say is the right and just thing to do. And in the end, somebody dies and gets screwed. Oedipus kills his father and sleeps with his mother, but he's responsible.
