Loved my students, colleagues and the area! I was born and raised in the north-central part of the state east of the Rockies, about 40 miles from the border with Canada. We used to refer to Missoula as "tropical Montana," because the temperatures were comparatively milder there, whereas we usually had to use head-bolt heaters in the winter for our cars to start.
The state was MUCH bluer in my youth, with Mike Mansfield, Lee Metcalf and Pat Williams representing us in DC. From this, you can deduce that my heyday there was a LONG time ago.
I haven't lived in Missoula since 1980, although I visit the state as often as I can to see family, friends and just to experience the Big Sky.
My sons, who spent much of their own youth there, STILL consider the state home, although one now lives in MD and the other splits his time between Las Vegas and LA. Both are strong Dems, I am very happy to say!
