(47,427 posts)People are encouraged to be highly competitive and their worth as a person is measured by financial and material success. I remember when the phrase "Nice guys finish last" became popular and we laughed as if it was a joke, but it was becoming a motto that many people lived by. "Do unto others" was quaint and outdated, "The one who dies with the most toys, wins" was more fitting for the materialistic age.
I started to notice that the only higher education that seemed to matter was business oriented, unless you wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer. In the book "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", the poor dad was a teacher who actually loved what he was doing, but his son (the author) so him as a failure because he wasn't rich. So to many people success is only about money.
