Not because of the irony of Americans fleeing to Mexico, but at the total lack of credulity that Mexico would accept millions, or even thousands, of American refugees. They would not want such a disruption of their lives, economy, housing and food needs, etc.
Then to make it even less credible, the reason given for Mexican acceptance of US refugees was that the US had forgiven Mexico's monitory debt to the US. As if the US was in any bargaining position at that time. After all, the US no longer existed at that point and had no power to collect on any debts, so forgiveness of a debt was pointless. "Ay, greeengos. Mehico owes you noteeng. Ees you que owes Mehico ahorra."
