You think it's heavy holding it, try having to high port around a quadrangle with it. For you non military types, I don't know if it is still done but in the day "high porting" was a particular form of punishment where you held the rifle in both hands, lifted it over your head until your arms were straight and then ran as far and as long as the individual administering the punishment decided you should.
