(5,444 posts)All of those had serious flaws or were replaced by stronger competitors within 5-6 years or so. With the exception of AOL which was around for longer, but it's business model was destroyed by the advent of the internet--it just took some time. It was Compuserve (dominant for over 10 years) that was the best example of what you are trying to say, but it too was done in by the internet. To defeat a dominant company requires qualitatively superior technology-- that is the key.
Twitter has been in existence for 16 years--it has achieved dominance with much deeper roots as has FaceBook/Meta. It's a different era than that faced by Geocities and AltaVista when there was such a large amount of money (dot com era) funding potential competitors.
That's not to say that there are not potential rivals today: Telegram and Discord come to mind because they offer new features and are becoming dominant as well. We will see.
