The monument contains the following: In memory of the most brilliant soldier of the Continental Army who was desperately wounded on this spot, the sally port of Burgoynes great [western] redoubt 7th October 1777 winning for his countrymen the decisive battle of the American Revolution and for himself the rank of Major General.

Especially during our "gloom period" between New Year's and spring break, there were sometimes a few sarcastic comments at school along the lines of, "Anyone trying to sell this place to the British couldn't have been all bad."

Arnold was not well-liked in London. An officer who was very popular was Major John Andre, British Adjutant and Intelligence Chief in the colonies. He was hanged as a spy after being captured in civilian clothes and in possession of information about West Point's fortifications. The British Commander refused to trade Arnold for Andre and Londoners tended to Blame Arnold for Andre's death.
Still, there are several Arnold Memorials in London.
